New Zealand consistently ranks among the world's top campervanning destinations. The question isn't whether to go — it's how to split your time between two very different islands.

The South Island consistently wins for scenery — Fiordland, Aoraki/Mount Cook, Queenstown, and the Catlins are world-class. The North Island wins for diversity and Maori cultural experience — Rotorua, Tongariro, and the Bay of Islands each offer completely different experiences. A 21-day trip allowing 7–10 days per island is the most popular itinerary among first-timers.
Budget 2-berth campervans start at NZ$80–120/night off-peak. Mid-range 4-berth motorhomes run NZ$160–250/night. Peak season (December–February) rates are 30–50% higher. Add NZ$20–45/night for campsite fees (holiday parks) or $0 for freedom camping in self-contained vehicles on designated roadside areas.
The Freedom Camping Act 2011 allows camping on most public land (roads, reserves) unless prohibited by signage. However, you must be in a self-contained vehicle (toilet with a sealed tank, grey water storage). Councils can prohibit camping in specific areas. The CamperMate app shows designated freedom camping sites updated by councils. Fines for non-compliance range from NZ$200–$400.
If your driving licence is in English, you don't need an IDP. If it's not in English (or uses non-Roman characters), you do need an IDP or an official English translation. You must have held your licence for at least 12 months. Minimum rental age with most operators is 21, and 25 for some vehicle classes.
October–April is the campervanning season. December–February (summer) is peak — school holidays and maximum visitor numbers. March–April offers excellent weather with fewer crowds and better freedom camping availability. September–October is shoulder season — good deals but some mountain passes may still have snow.
